Job Description: For more than 75 years, SEIU has been helping working families stand up for their rights, fighting for dignity and respect in the workplace. With a membership of 2.2 million strong, SEIU is the fastest-growing union in the labor movement. Our diverse staff of organizers helps janitors, home care aids, mental health workers, office workers, school bus drivers, public employees, nurses, and other hospital workers join forces to bring democracy to the workplace.

The SEIU–WAVE (Organizer-In-Training) Program is a training and placement program for people who want to make a difference as union organizers. As an Organizer-in-Training with the SEIU WAVE Program you will be part of a dynamic union that is committed to giving a voice to thousands of workers and helping to provide lasting social change for the working class.

At SEIU (www.seiu.org) , we are looking for energetic and passionate individuals who are ready to organize people to fight for better lives for themselves and their families. This is your opportunity to put your commitment to social and economic justice to work building power for working people by organizing the unorganized!

POSITIONS ARE NATIONWIDE.

All applicants must attend a one-day screening and those who are recommended to move on in the process will go on to be trained on one of our many organizing campaigns. The training can be anywhere from 3-4 months anywhere in the United States where organizing campaigns are taking place. You will also go through an intensive training before starting on campaigns under the guidance of experienced staff and mentors. Each WAVE will also meet regularly for additional training and mentoring.

Job Qualifications: Who should apply?

Union organizing is not easy. It takes courage and commitment to support our uphill struggle for a just society. A successful applicant for the organizer-in-training position should have the following:
 1 year or less demonstrated commitment to social justice and grassroots organizing
 Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills
 Possession of excellent listening skills and the ability to comprehend the concerns of others
 Ability to manage your time independently and carry out work plans with minimal supervision
 Willingness to travel and/or relocate for extended periods of time
 Ability to work long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays
 Ability to motivate and activate others
 Possession of sharp problem-solving skills
 Bilingual speaker a plus
 Possession of basic map navigation skills a plus
 Possession of a valid driver’s license required

Peace Action West is hiring full time and part time community organizers. No experience is necessary – paid training is provided. We are located in Downtown Oakland, near the 19th st. Bart station and several bus lines. Women, people of color, and LGBTQ are encouraged to apply.

Full Time:
Field organizers with Peace Action West work all over the Bay Area educating the public, generating legislative pressure on Congress, and building grassroots support for a peaceful foreign policy.
We work weekdays. Pay ranges from $350-$600 per week, with opportunities for advancement, paid vacation and holidays, medical and dental benefits.

Part Time:
Phone outreach organizers build and retain a committed membership base by updating and educating the members on our current campaigns, as well as encouraging activism.
We have shifts weekdays from 5:30-9:30 PM, and a Sunday shift from 3:00-7:00 PM (minimum requirement of 4 shifts per week). Evening hours and flexible schedule are perfect for students. There is opportunity for advancement, as well as medical and dental benefits.

Job Opening: Pennsylvania Communities Organizing for Change (PCOC) Community Organizer

PCOC is moving campaigns for goods public schools, affordable healthcare, fighting foreclosures, and a fair shake for Main Street after the bailout of Wall Street. By taking direct action, we hold elected officials and those in power accountable to create positive change for all working families at the local state and national levels.

What does a community organizer do? Community organizers work at the community level to build grassroots social justice organizations. This process involves doorknocking, housemeetings, phonebanks, mailings, mass meetings, and direct action! Organizers work to recruit members, help them mobilize for community change, develop new grassroots leadership, and conduct campaigns around community issues such as environmental justice campaigns and state and national issues such as minimum wage and fighting predatory lending. Organizers also engage in grassroots fundraising of various kinds.

To be a good organizer, you need a strong commitment to grassroots organizing and transformative change; the energy & dedication to work long hours, both in an office setting and out in the neighborhoods; the ability to juggle lots of things at once; a sense of adventure, and a sense of humor!
