I’ve recently served as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Ketchikan, Alaska, and I want to provide VISTA candidates with some advice. In this video, I will give you 5 rules to live by if you hope to make it as a VISTA.

Wow what a great heads up, question everything! Looks like AmeriCorps engineers poverty, purposefully! Why? My main question though is ~ WHO GETS ALL OF THE MONEY? I mean even the AD is on Craigslist:

CND is hiring an AmeriCorps VISTA to work as a community organizer in its Community Engagement Program. The CE program supports relationship building and leadership development through social events, neighborhood improvement projects, a community garden, and campaigns to increase recycling and community safety. The organizer/VISTA will function as a core part of our Community Engagement staff devoted to building the network of engaged and empowered Chelsea residents.

The VISTA will build CND’s capacity to engage and expand its resident network through community organizing. The work will focus on increasing the number of residents that work on neighborhood revitalization issues and who participate in Community Engagement programs, including NeighborCircles, a series of three facilitated dinner conversations among neighbors in a resident’s home. S/he will develop systems to reach CND tenants and engage volunteers. S/he will also help build the capacity of the Community Enhancement Team, a group of residents dedicated to improving the resources and conditions of their neighborhood, through leadership training.
Tasks may include: conducting outreach, event planning, recruiting and training volunteers, supporting campaigns, building the capacity of resident volunteers through leadership training, and assisting Community Engagement staff with reporting and support of ongoing projects.
This position requires a commitment to serve as a full-time VISTA for one year. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for community development to gain skills and experience in organizing and community building.
